Jig Head

Weights

When choosing the weight of the jig head, there are at least two important factors to consider:

  • how much wind and how strong the current is running. Remember the tide and the time of day can influence these factors.
  • the type of terrain you plan to fish.

If you have a good long day of fishing, you would most likely end up adjusting your jig head weight several times as you move around and encounter different fishing environment.

Coast and bays

Along a coast line or in a calm bay, you are likely to encounter weed lines, sand, reef, rocks and boulders, kelp, gutters, current lines, pinnacles and white wash. Most of the time in these types of terrains, you are fishing from three meters to no more than fifteen meters depth which requires a lot less weight on your jig head.

Try to use the lightest jig head you can. Only light to moderate weights of 1/6oz to 3/8oz are needed in this environment.

Wash Fishing

Weights used in this situation can range from 1/4oz to 5/8oz and heavier, depending on the size of your soft bait and the depth of water below.
Again, it is a matter of assessing the current, surge and the most likely position of the fish in the water column on that particular spot.

Current

At the end of a bay or on a point, you will encounter current lines which again demands different weight to get your soft bait down to where the fish are.
Most likely, you would need to opt for a heavier jig head. Correct weights from 3/8oz to 5/8oz are needed when depths of seven to twenty five meters are encountered.
